Study Abroad: Learning from Puerto Rico: Environmental, Economic, and Political Challenges for the Future

Summer Abroad Opportunity in Puerto Rico

Learning from Puerto Rico: Environmental, Economic, and Political Challenges for the Future

This study abroad program allows for a first-hand, critical examination of global warming focused on the experiences of the Puerto Rican people during post-Hurricane Maria. Shortly after the hurricanes hit, a series of earthquakes also rocked the island, which, compounded with the decade-long economic crisis in Puerto Rico, made matters even worse.  On this program you will explore how these devastating events from the past will continue to influence Puerto Rico’s environmental, political, and economic challenges in the future.

You will engage with local community leaders and activists on these important topics of the 21st century, visit grassroots eco-sites, participate in social-cultural excursions, and experience Puerto Ricos’ rich and preserved natural resources, art, and artisan heritage.

The travel component of the program is from August 2nd – 14th, however there will be approximately one week of classes in Chicago prior to traveling. These exact dates will be released soon.
